Honorable mentions include Conker's Bad Fur Day, Mario Party 2, Excitebike 64, Pilotwings 64, Rocket: Robot on Wheels, Mario Tennis, Turok, Wrestlemania, No Mercy, BattleTanx, Episode I: Racer, Snowboard Kids, Mischief Makers, ISS98, and many, many more. The games toward the top of this list are the ones that we feel have the best combination of those three criteria, while the ones towards the bottom, or the ones that didn't make the cut, might be strong in one of those aspects, but lacking in the others. Second, we tried to consider a number of factors, including historical significance, how good it looked and played at the time, in addition to how well it holds up today, y’know, just in case you’re still able to dig your old N64 out of the closet. First, while we didn't have a hard rule on only including games that were exclusive to the Nintendo 64, we also didn’t want to include games that are just simply better on other platforms of that era, like Resident Evil 2 and Rayman 2. Avoid overclocking unless you use active cooling, you'll likely just make it overheat which will get you even worse performance and kill your pi over time.As always with any kind of list like this, it’s important to establish our criteria to explain as best as we can why some games made the list and others didn’t. N64 optimization is definitely a rabbit hole so be prepared to experiment a lot. Try different emulator cores too if they're available.
It'll look blurry as shit but it will run at a better frame rate. See if you can find the menu for the emulator settings and drop the resolution down to 320x240, then work your way back up from there, that should make the biggest impact. But there's a lot more to it than just that. Flirc case for rpi4 is probably your best option if you want to maintain portability and not bother with fans.
Overheating will cause the cpu (and gpu?) to be throttled to cool down a bit and cripple performance. The rpi4 gets way too hot without a really good heatsink or active cooling (fan or water-cooling). Easiest thing you can do is have good cooling. Mario Kart 64 runs pretty well so I usually test with that. The roms won't make a difference, though some games are doomed to run like shit no matter what.
